Organisers of the Nebraska Mission of Mercy clinic have announced that a free dental clinic will be held in Grand Island on the 3rd and 4th June.

The Mission of Mercy clinic was held in the area in 2006 and the clinic is set to return in June; organisers are hoping to treat more than 2,000 people during the two-day event. The clinic will cost around $150,000; the St Francis Medical Center will donate $50,000 to the clinic. The medical centre believes that good oral health is essential for good general health and supports the work carried out by the Mission of Mercy. Nurses and other members of staff from the medical clinic will also be volunteering at the event.

The clinic will be held at the Exhibition Building on the state fair grounds; appointments will be given out on a first come, first served basis and organisers are expecting thousands of people to attend. Recent events have attracted large crowds and many people have queued overnight to secure an appointment.

More than 200 volunteer dentists and 200 dental assistants will join forces for the event; a range of treatments, including cleaning treatments, extractions, fillings, root canal therapy and dentures will be on offer.

The Mission of Mercy was established to help people who do not have dental insurance; their work has become increasingly important over the course of the last four years, as many people have been hit hard by the recession. Free dental events are attracting huge crowds around America and many people are being turned away as there are simply not enough appointments available.
