Local volunteers took their expertise to the area of Bemidji in a bid to provide dental treatment to a number of children and adults.

Two organisations; the Minnesota Dental Foundation as well as The Minnesota Dental Association brought the Mission of Mercy team on the weekend of June 14th and 15th. The free treatment was particularly helpful to those who are uninsured because fees are too high.

Drs’ David Anderson, Lora Nelson and dental assistant Kara Zweerink were among the volunteers whose office resides in Park Rapids. They stated that there were glad to help the rural population of Minnesota as they were so grateful. What’s more, Dr Nelson said it was great helping out the families there. She went on to say that they provided help not only to the unemployed but to those who couldn’t afford dental insurance as dental treatments were so expensive in the area.

The team were able to provide a number of x-rays, tooth extractions, cleaning treatments and fillings. They also spoke to the patients about preventative dental care, so that they can maintain good levels of oral hygiene themselves. The volunteers worked from 5am-5pm each day over the weekend.

Delta Dental of Minnesota sponsored the treatment day, costing them over $1 million dollars’ worth. In total 6,879 procedures were successfully completed.

Dr Anderson finally went on to say that they are planning another Mission of Mercy day in Minnesota for 2014. He also said that his office will willingly offer their services once more. A location is yet to be decided upon.
