Milk After Cereal Reduces Caries Risk

Sample News Big

Drinking a glass of milk after eating a bowl of sugary breakfast cereal in the morning could do wonders to reduce the risk of caries.

This is according to recent research from Chicago College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois.

A test was performed that essentially involved adults eating a popular sugary cereal dry. Then each drinking a different beverage; milk, water and apple juice.

A microelectrode that senses the pH level was touched on the premolars before and after the food and drink had been consumed. Then another pH test was administered a further half an hour after drinking the selected fluid.

The milk drinker showed a marked reduction in acidity levels whilst the other two did not.

Milk is often thought of as a great drink for teeth because of the remineralising properties it holds.
