Melbourne dentist shares affordable hacks for better oral health

As studies show that a third of Australian adults suffer from untreated decay, a Melbourne dentist has shared some affordable hacks to boost oral health.

Dr Giuliana D’Anna, the founder of Victoria-based clinic, iDental, claims that there are several simple, inexpensive ways you can protect your smile and reduce the risk of developing cavities and gum disease.

Top of the list is eating celery. Chewing on raw celery, and other vegetables like peppers and carrots, increases saliva production, which cleanses the mouth and helps to reduce
acidity. Using a water flosser is another tip the Australia dentist swears by. Water flossers are ideal for people who find it hard to clean the gaps between the teeth, including patients with arthritis and those undergoing orthodontic treatment. These devices use high-powered jets of water to remove debris and plaque.

Dr D’Anna also warns against drinking sparkling water. The risks associated with fizzy pop and energy drinks are well-documented, but sparkling water is not such a saintly alternative.
Unlike still water, fizzy water contains acids, which can be even more damaging to the enamel than juice. On the subject of drinks, the Melbourne dentist also advises against drinking tea. Tea contains staining agents, which are more powerful than those found in coffee.

To increase tooth strength and protect the enamel, Dr D’Anna also recommends increasing your intake of fluoride. Good sources include milk, yoghurt, cheese, tofu, leafy green vegetables, nuts, sardines and fortified bread.
