Massachusetts residents resist fluoride campaigns

Sample News Big

Massachusetts has long been associated with excellent standards of health and dental care, yet a large number of counties are still without fluoridated water supplies.

The state frequently records good results when it comes to healthcare provision and services; however, it ranks only 36th in the list for providing fluoridated water.

The issue of fluoride is a contentious one in Massachusetts; despite the evident oral health benefits associated with fluoridated water supplies, many people still resist measures to enhance water supplies and a number of council panels consistently campaign against adding fluoride to the water. Many people believe that adding fluoride to the central water supply is tantamount to pollution and anti-fluoride campaigners frequently lobby against dentists and health experts, claiming that they are poisoning people by adding fluoride to the water.

Fluoride is added to the water in countries across the world and numerous studies have confirmed the positive oral health benefits associated with added fluoride. Fluoride helps to strengthen the enamel surfaces of the teeth, which protects them against harmful bacteria and consequently makes them more resistant to decay. Dental and health experts are actively campaigning for fluoridated water supplies across Massachusetts; however, they are often met with strong resistance and the subject remains extremely contentious.
