The Massachusetts Board of Dentistry has approved plans to enable general dentist to provide Botox treatment. The board has released a revised policy stating that general dentists can provide Botox and anti-wrinkle injections.

According to the policy advisory, the board confirms the need for practical training, involving live patients, for these procedures. The statement affirms the need for live patient training within the definition of the Massachusetts Dental Practice Act relating to the diagnosis, treatment and management of any disease or condition affecting the teeth, alveolar bone, jaw and gums.

The advisory also relates to the oral and maxillofacial areas involved in Botox and anti-ageing treatment, according to Dr Louis Malcmacher, president of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics. Dr Malcmacher said that training courses and continued education programmes in dermal fillers and Botox are provided at around 50 dental universities.

The American Academy of Facial Esthetics provides training courses for general dentists, which meet the criteria set out by the Massachusetts Board of Dentistry and other state boards. The next course is due to take place in Boston from the 2nd-4th May.
