Make Oral Health a Priority for the New Year

Sample News Big

Many of us have been making New Year resolutions to get fit, lose weight, eat more greens or give up smoking, but have you thought of making your oral health a priority this year?

Numerous studies have now indicated a link between poor oral health and a host of serious illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes and recently bad dental health has also been linked to an increased risk of pneumonia and strokes. Research suggests that oral health is more important than ever before and experts are keen to encourage people to take note of the importance of good oral health and take steps to protect their teeth and keep their gums healthy.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation stressed the need for people to be aware of the importance of brushing their teeth properly and visiting a dentist on a regular basis. He said that studies have shown that bacteria present in the mouth as a result of decay and gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease, as well as almost doubling the risk of an individual developing diabetes.

In order to keep oral health diseases at bay, it is essential to stick to a good daily oral hygiene routine, which should include brushing the teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, flossing to target hard-to-reach areas and rinsing using mouthwash. In addition, regular dental check-ups every 6-12 months are very important, as a check-up enables the dentist to spot any early warning signs of dental problems or diseases and can potentially detect signs of serious illnesses, including diabetes and oral cancer.
