Longleat Gorilla Dies After Undergoing Treatment For Dental Abscess

One of Longleat’s most popular animals has died, keepers have confirmed.

Boulas, a 27 year old Silverback gorilla weighing 200 kilograms, died this week after developing complications following a standard procedure to treat a dental abscess. A post-mortem has yet to be carried out but keepers fear that Boulas may have had another abscess in his throat, which caused him to suffer respiratory problems when he was recovering from dental treatment.

Director of animal operations at the park, Jon Cracknell, said that everyone at Longleat was devastated by the loss of Boulas, who quickly became one of the park’s most popular and well-loved residents.

After undergoing a standard procedure to treat a dental abscess, Boulas developed troubles with his breathing and the team was unable to save him, despite its best efforts.

Boulas arrived at Longleat two years ago from Twycross Zoo.

Keepers confirmed that the gorilla passed away on Tuesday and a full post-mortem examination will be carried out in the near future.
