A nurse from South London has visited the Philippines, her birth country, to help children born with a cleft lip and palate.

Ellen Paniamogan was born in the Philippines and completed her nurse training there before moving to the UK. She decided to return to her native land as part of a charity mission to help children born with a cleft lip and palate. Ellen was one of a team of 13 volunteers who take part in the trip, which lasted for eight days and was organised by the charity, Missions for Children. The group visited the City of Tacloban Layte and treated more than 40 children during their stay.

Ellen used the fact that she was able to speak Filipino fluently to communicate with parents and children and found out that they share the same fears as parents affected by birth defects in the UK.

Missions for Children organises a series of dental and medical missions to help children living in some of the world’s poorest countries; the charity arranges around 15 to 20 trips per year with destinations including China, Guatemala, Peru, India, Rwanda, Ukraine and Tanzania.

Ellen said that the experience was “eye-opening” and she hopes to help out with more projects in the future.
