Children in Loma Linda will now benefit from free dental care after the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry received a grant from the First 5 Riverside County Children & Families Commission.

The grant will allow the university to expand dental care for children in the local area. Herbert Atienza, a spokesman for Loma Linda University Health, said that the funding will enable children to access “much-needed dental care.” The grant will fund children’s care for a four year period, with funds released gradually.

The additional money will enable 5,500 children to have screenings every year and 700 children who are part of the Riverside County Dental Program will have access to further treatment.

assistant professor at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Dr Carla Lidner Baum, said that the grant was a “huge thing for us” and added that everyone is looking forward to working with the children to promote good oral health ensure that they have access to the care they need.

One of the primary focuses for the dental team will be to highlight the importance of preventative dental measures. Prevention is better than cure and both decay and gum disease can be prevented very easily with good oral hygiene, a healthy diet and regular dental screening.
