A dentist from Lockerbie is encouraging fellow dental professionals to join local running clubs. Ryan Stewart has set up a number of local ventures in the last few weeks to help dentists reap the rewards of an active lifestyle.

Ryan, from Lockerbie Dental, enjoys running and he finds that it has a massive impact on his mental wellbeing and stress levels, as well as his physical health. Talking about his passion for getting out and going for a run, Ryan said that he can feel the difference when he doesn’t run frequently, and he wanted to try and help others by getting them involved at what is a very stressful time for the profession.

Ryan launched the Scottish Dental Runners at the end of August, and he is encouraging dentists, dental nurses, technicians, hygienists and anyone else who works in dentistry to join clubs close to them. Running with others is a great social activity and it has incredible benefits for physical and mental health. Ryan described running as a “big part of my life” and said that it keeps him “sane” when life gets hectic or he feels anxious or stressed. The aim of the running clubs is to enable others to enjoy the benefits of being more active.

So far, Ryan has launched clubs in Glasgow, Perth, Inverness, Aberdeen and Edinburgh and a new club has just started in Dumfries and Galloway. Anyone who works in dentistry is welcome to join and all abilities can get involved. There is a group on Facebook with more information and Ryan posts training sessions online every Tuesday and Thursday. So far, there are over 200 members on social media.
