Llantwit Major dental practice to offer free mouth cancer screening on 10th November

A dental practice in Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan is offering free mouth cancer screening on the 10th November to mark Mouth Cancer Action Month.

The team at Wyndham House Dental Practice will be providing free dental checks on Saturday 10th November between 9am and 1pm. Appointments are available for all local people, not just those registered with the practice.

Practice manager, Simon Hill, said that the session will hopefully encourage more people to think about oral cancer, as it doesn’t have a very high public profile. Many people are unaware of mouth cancer, despite the fact that it actually kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined.

Appointments can be booked via phone or email, and the team is really hoping that the community will get involved with the initiative. Checks will also be available on the day, but only if there are still places available.

Mouth cancer has become much more prevalent in the UK in the last decade, but studies show that public awareness is poor. A recent study, which was published to coincide with the launch of Mouth Cancer Action Month 2018, suggests that almost half of adults don’t know anything about mouth cancer, despite the fact that rates have increased by 49% in the last ten years.

As well as offering free screening, Wyndham House Dental Practice is also hosting a raffle and the Mayor of Llantwit Major will also be visiting.
