Leading North East Dentist Issues Summer Holiday Dental Warnings

One of the North East’s leading dentists has issued some summer holiday dental warnings to encourage people to take good care of their teeth and gums when they jet off to sunny climes.

Dr Ken Harris from Riveredge Cosmetic Dentistry in Sunderland and Newcastle has warned that exotic holidays can take their toll on dental health. He has encouraged holidaymakers to spare a thought for their teeth this summer. Warmer countries and their holiday spirit often encourage us to drink more juices, fizzy drinks and alcohol, all of which can be damaging for our oral health. Some people also tend to rely on energy drinks to recover from late nights and a lack of sleep. Dr Harris has also warned that swallowing pool water can increase the risk of acid erosion of the tooth enamel.

Dr Harris said that dental health is probably not at the forefront of people’s minds when they’re going away, but neglecting teeth and gums can result in unwanted issues such as toothache, gum disease and cavities. The last thing you want is to visit an emergency dentist in a foreign country. If you’re due to see your dentist for a check-up, it’s always a good idea to arrange an appointment before you go.

In order to combat holiday dental nightmares, Dr Harris recommends limiting your intake of sugary drinks, drinking with a straw and sticking to water between meals. It’s also hugely beneficial to avoid snacking and to wait an hour after eating to brush your teeth.
