Andrew Lansley, the health minister, has announced a funding boost for the NHS, which will affect medical, dental and community health services.

Mr Lansley has confirmed that the NHS will receive an additional 2.5 billion pounds next year, which represents a 2.8% increase.

The health minister announced that 91.6 billion pounds will go directly to Primary Care Trusts and 4.1 billion pounds will be allocated to dental, eye care and pharmaceutical services.

Mr Lansley said that the extra money will help PCTs to improve services and maintain high standards of care. Despite the funding increases, Lansley stated that it was still important for the NHS to try and get good value for money.

Mr Lansley also confirmed that the government was still eager to give greater control of the budget and organisation of the health system to health professionals, rather than executives and managers. He stated that he wants those who have first-hand experience of caring for patients to be in charge of major decisions, as they have the knowledge and expertise to be able to make the system more effective and efficient for staff, patients and their relatives.

The announcement comes in light of research suggesting that many GPs that have taken over PCT budgets have fallen into the red.
