A leading dental consultant from Lancaster is all smiles after receiving a nomination for an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List. Eric Rooney MBE said he was “delighted” and thanked all his colleagues over the last 30 years for their support, enthusiasm and continued commitment to improving dental treatment in the UK.

Mr Rooney is currently deputy chief dental officer for NHS England and has previously held positions including clinical director, public health director and medical director at various NHS trusts. He has been an active member of the British Dental Association for several years and played an instrumental part in negotiating a new contract for dentists in the mid-noughties. He has since liased directly with the Department of Health and was co-author of a review entitled ‘Dental Services in England’ in 2008/2009, which provided an insight into primary care services in England and suggested measures to move services forward in the future.

More recently, Mr Rooney MBE has been involved in the Smile4Life programme, which involves local authorities working with health and education providers to enforce measures to try and promote healthy living and reduce the risk of tooth decay in young children. Mr Rooney was also elected chair of the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry and has held the role of deputy chief dental officer in England since November 2015.

Speaking about the prestigious honour, Mr Rooney MBE said that he was all too aware of the importance of collaboration and teamwork in dentistry and thanked all those who had shared his visions and worked alongside him to improve dental care in the UK over the last few decades.
