A dental assistant from Lambourn is preparing to travel to Northern Greece to provide much-needed dental care for hundreds of refugees.

Victoria Whitfield, who is based at Cousins Dental Practice, will travel to Thessaloniki as part of a project run by Dentaid. She decided to take up the opportunity after hearing of the plight of thousands of people stuck in the area without access to even the most basic healthcare. Nobody living in the camps has a toothbrush or a tube of toothpaste, and Victoria felt compelled to use her skills to help those in desperate need. It is estimated that up to 60,000 refugees are living in and around Thessaloniki and the Greek authorities are struggling to provide food, water, shelter and healthcare for them.

Victoria said that she has always wanted to take part in a volunteer project and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to make a positive difference to people who are in genuine need of urgent help. Victoria will be working with other volunteers running a temporary clinic to offer treatment and provide advice about oral hygiene.

Victoria, 26, said she is anxious about the trip, but also incredibly excited about the challenges it will offer and the experience she will gain. She’s well aware that the working conditions will be very tough and she’s ready to put in long hours to help as many people as possible.
