Lack of Dental Care Impacts on Self-Esteem

Sample News Big

Most people are aware that missing out on regular dental appointments increases their risk of developing dental diseases, but struggling to get a dental appointment can also impact on self-esteem and confidence.

Statistics show that 45 million Americans do not have dental insurance and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a dentist who offers discounted rates. As a result, the number of Emergency Room admissions has increased and a growing number of people are worrying about their oral health.

Joy Bates is one of thousands of people struggling to see a dentist and she said that it is not just her teeth and gums that are suffering and claims that going without regular dental appointments is causing her to suffer from low self-esteem, which is impacting on her daily life.

Studies have shown that people who are not happy with their smile are less likely to feel confident, especially when they are forced to open their mouths around other people or interact in social situations.

A good daily oral hygiene routine can help to keep oral diseases at bay and should include brushing the teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time, flossing and rinsing using mouthwash on a regular basis. Regular check-ups are also very important. Cutting out routine check-ups will save money in the short-term but will increase the amount you have to spend on dental care in the future, as there is a much higher risk of more serious conditions developing, which are more difficult and more expensive to treat.
