Travelling abroad for dental work is a decision that should be carefully considered, the chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) has said.

According to Dr Nigel Carter, people who travel overseas for dental procedures tend to be looking for low prices on complicated treatments.

However, Dr Carter points out that problems are more likely to occur during more complex operations, leaving British consumers abroad potentially unsure of their rights.

"For people who suffer complications from their treatment and cannot afford to fly back or have it corrected by a UK dentist, what started as a simple way to save money can quickly develop into a nightmare," the BDHF chief executive asserts.

Nevertheless, he acknowledges that travelling abroad for dental treatments can be a "valid option", noting that patients who do so may save a significant amount of money.

The BDHF issued a warning against venturing overseas for dental treatmentin September of last year following its receipt of a spate of calls from people who had encountered problems during such trips.
