A dental nurse has described her time in Uganda as “amazing” after spending 2 weeks in the country providing basic dental care for children.

Joanne Shepherd, from Colin C Yule and Associates, Forfar, returned from her trip to Uganda last month after spending 2 weeks treating children in the south west of the country. Joanne was part of a team of eight volunteers who worked alongside six Ugandan dentists to provide a range of procedures, from extractions and fillings, to preventative treatments, for children. Many of the children had never seen a dentist before and this was their first experience in the dental chair.

During their time in Uganda, the team encountered children as young as 6 months old who needed dental treatment and worked with basic instruments to provide pain relief and administer preventative treatments to help to protect children in the future.

Joanne said that the experience is something that will remain with her for the rest of her life. She met some incredible people and experienced a completely different setting to the one she is used to at home.

Joanne raised a total of over £3,700 for the trip. Part of her fundraising efforts included a trek up Ben Nevis, which she completed with friends, family members and colleagues from the practice.

The trip was organised by dental charity, Dentaid, which sponsors volunteer projects all over the world to make dental care accessible to people living in poor and remote communities.
