A dental duo from Kingsbridge has returned from a charity mission in Kenya.

Last month, dentist Kasia Stawowy and dental nurse Millie Gordon, from Kingsbridge Dental Centre, travelled to Kenya with the charity Smile Star. The aim of the trip was to provide dental treatment to people living in the remote villages close to the Masai Mara.

During their time in Kenya, Kasia and Millie were part of a team that treated more than 1,000 people. Many of the adults and children they saw had never seen a dentist before, and local people were incredibly grateful for the care provided by the Smile Star volunteers.

Smile Star was set up to enable people living in rural parts of countries in Africa and Asia to access dental treatment; the charity also supports initiatives for Royal Marines back in the UK.

Kasia and Millie formed part of a team of ten volunteers, which was made up of dentists, nurses and dental assistants. They didn’t have access to a huge amount of equipment, and were unable to offer services like fillings; however, they were able to provide routine checks and cleaning treatments. They also referred patients who required further treatment to local dental services.

Before they set off for Kenya, Kasia and Millie worked hard to raise money for the trip. They hosted a series of events, including an evening at The Crabshell, which was put together by Amanda Burwell from Poshtotti. In total, the pair managed to raise £1,600 for the charity. They also covered the cost of flights and basic supplies themselves.

Kasia thanked everyone for their support and of course, their donations, and she added that it was wonderful to support such a worthy cause. She is already hoping to return again in the future.
