A dental nurse from Keswick has travelled to the Greek Islands as part of an aid mission to provide dental treatment for refugees.

Mei Glennon left the UK on the 2nd April, and she will spend a week on the island of Samos, where there is a large refugee camp. The mission has been organised by Dentaid and many volunteer dentists and nurses have already visited the island, as well as the mainland and the isle of Lesbos, to support the scheme. The programme is set to run from March until May, and dental teams are doing all they can to rid refugees of pain and make them feel more comfortable.

Mei has been a dental nurse at Fitz Park Dental Practice for five years, and she is visiting Greece after seeing moving appeals on television and reading the stories of others who have volunteered. Many of the refugees have fled Syria, and some are suffering from severe dental pain. Mei has already applied to support programmes in Greece and Morocco in 2018.

Mei said she didn’t hesitate for a moment when she heard about volunteering opportunities with Dentaid, and she was looking forward to being able to help people who found themselves in tragic situations through no fault of their own. Many have been separated from friends and family and lost everything they worked hard to establish, and the help and support of volunteers like those working for Dentaid makes a massive difference.
