A dental nurse from Kendal has raised thousands of pounds for charity during lockdown.

Kian Palmer, a qualified dental nurse and treatment coordinator from Crossbank Dental Care, wanted to raise money after her mum, Norma, was diagnosed with cancer in January 2020. During the first lockdown, Kian set up a new virtual fitness community, encouraging women to take part in daily challenges and workouts for a good cause.

During March, Kian and members of the fitness community from all over the UK completed 2,750 miles, raising money for Cancer Research UK and lung cancer research projects. The initial target was 2,000 miles but the team smashed their goal. The group of eighteen has now raised almost £2,000.

Kian launched the fundraising challenge through her new online fitness community, Team Challenge Daily Work Out (TeamCDWO) in the hope that she could help other families avoid the pain and heartache her family has suffered since Norma’s diagnosis. Speaking about the situation, Kian said she can still remember every word of the conversation she had with her mum when she called to say she had been diagnosed with cancer.

When Kian launched the appeal, her fellow fitness enthusiasts were desperate to get behind her. Team member, Jules Blain, said that there was “no hesitation” and everyone was eager to support Kian, her family and the charity.
