A necklace made from John Lennon’s tooth is touring the UK to raise awareness of mouth cancer, a disease that is becoming increasingly prevalent in the UK.

The necklace, which was made from a molar tooth, which was purchased at auction by Canadian dentist, Dr Michael Zuk, will travel around 16 dental practices across the country to raise awareness of mouth cancer as part of the British Dental Health Foundation’s Mouth Cancer Awareness Month campaign, which will run throughout the month of November.

In addition to showing off the DNA necklace to patients, the participating dental practices will also be offering free oral cancer screening and information packs about mouth cancer. The campaign is also timed perfectly with the 50th anniversary celebration of The Beatles.

In a statement, Dr Zuk said that it was “cool that a bit of Beatle tooth dust can actually help get a group of professionals working together on an important project.” Thousands of people die from mouth cancer every year in theUKand the number of cases has increased significantly over the course of the last decade. Rock star, Eddie Van Halen was treated for mouth cancer ten years ago and Zuk hopes that the rock star stories will help to raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage people to get checked out this month.

The pendant was designed by famous Beverly Hills jeweller, Ari Stoffer and is valued at $25,000. Zuk bought the molar last year; it was sold by co-founder of Creation Records, Alan McGee, who acquired the tooth from Lennon’s former housekeeper, Dot Jarlett.
