John Lennon’s tooth is currently on display at a Chorley dental practice as part of a UK tour to try and raise awareness of mouth cancer.

The team at Southport Road Dental Practice dressed up in 60’s fancy dress to welcome the unique exhibit, which has been made into a necklace by Hollywood jewellery designer, Ari Soffer. The tooth was purchased by Canadian dentist, Dr Michael Zuk last year for around $19,000 and the necklace is estimated to be worth around $25,000.

The aim of the necklace tour is to raise awareness of mouth cancer, a disease, which is killing more and more people in the UK. Smile adviser, Clare Lord, said that the symptoms of mouth cancer are easy to spot if you know what you are supposed to be looking out for, but the problem is that most people are unaware of the warning signs and this means that cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage when the chance of successful treatment is lower.

Practice owner Dave Hickey welcomed the tooth wearing a Sergeant Pepper jacket and said that there had been a lot of excitement about the impending arrival of the iconic tooth.

According to Cancer Research UK, the number of cases of mouth cancer is rising each year and it is expected that 60,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease over the next ten years. Signs to look out for include red or white patches in the mouth, lumps in the mouth or throat and ulcers or sores that take more than 2-3 weeks to heal.
