With toothache, there’s a good chance that your pain is masking something more sinister, and dentists are eager for patients to react quickly.

If you’ve ever had toothache before, you’ll know that it can make life a misery. The advice from dentists is to arrange an appointment as a priority. Dental pain can be a sign of decay, infection, or gum disease. If you develop a large cavity or an abscess, your pain is likely to get even worse.

You can buy medicines, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, over the counter. Always ensure you follow dosage instructions, and check with a pharmacist or your dentist if you have underlying health issues, or you are already taking medication.

Sometimes, it’s impossible to avoid toothache, but seeing a dentist for regular check-ups will reduce your risk of developing infections and gum disease significantly. If you’re struggling with discomfort, or you haven’t been to the dentist in the last 6-12 months, you should schedule an appointment. Treating issues early will prevent the situation from getting worse, and reduce the cost of dental care. Good oral hygiene is also essential. A good daily care regime should include twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing can also be beneficial for cleaning the gaps between the teeth.
