The International Dental Federation has shared some useful dental tips to celebrate World Oral Health Day.

World Oral Health Day is an international, annual event, which takes place on the 20th March. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health and to encourage people to take good care of their teeth and gums.

As part of the campaign to improve global standards of oral health, dental professionals are encouraging good dental hygiene, healthy eating and regular trips to the dentist. An effective oral hygiene regime should include twice-daily brushing and inter-dental cleaning and most dentists recommend check-ups every 6-12 months. In the UK, dental care is available free of charge for children on the NHS. Studies show that sugar consumption is increasing, especially among children, and this is resulting in high rates of decay. Adults and children are advised to moderate their sugar intake to reduce the risk of cavities and other health conditions including obesity and diabetes.

Recently, Public Health England launched a campaign to educate parents and children about healthy snacking, as research showed that many children were consuming their daily recommended intake of sugar through snacking alone. Many of the leading supermarkets have also banned the sale of energy drinks, which tend to be laden with sugar, to under 16’s.
