Interdental brushes overtake flossing in the popularity stakes

More people in the UK use interdental brushes than dental floss, it has been confirmed.

Research carried out by the Oral Health Foundation suggests that more British adults are using interdental brushes than dental floss. A poll showed that 34 percent of participants use interdental brushes compared to 31 percent for floss.

Interdental brushes are sold at dental clinics, pharmacies and supermarkets. They are small, handheld brushes, which are specifically designed to clean between the teeth. When you use a normal brush, you can’t reach into these cracks, and using interdental brushes or flossing helps to reduce the risk of plaque formation.

The findings of the study have been welcomed by the charity, which recommends interdental brushing over flossing, as studies suggest that it is a more effective cleaning technique.

The study shows a marked improvement in standards of oral hygiene, as the number of people who clean between the teeth has risen from just 19 percent in 2007 to 62 percent in 2016. Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the foundation, said that the findings confirm that the stereotype of Britain as a nation of people with bad teeth is inaccurate.
