Indianapolis Mayor accused of fraud at dental office

The Indiana Attorney General’s office has filed a complaint against the Mayor of Southport, Indianapolis, it has been revealed.

The Attorney General is accusing Rob Thoman of fraud and material deception, whilst working at his dental office. Thoman allegedly failed to mention on his 1987 application that he had pleaded no contest to charges of fraud and embezzlement linked to school funding in 1981; at the time, Thoman was a student at Colorado State University. Thoman also failed to mention the incident when he filled out an application form to enable him to administer anaesthetics and sedatives in 2003.

The Attorney General has filed the complaint with the Board of Dentistry. There is also suspicion surrounding Thoman’s answer to a question asking about military service; Thoman answered ‘not appicable’ despite records revealing that he served as an operating specialist in the US Army between 1977 and 1980.

Deputy Attorney General Abby Kuzma said it was important that all relevant information is disclosed in applications forms, despite the charges relating to incidents which occurred a long time ago.

The Board of Dentistry has now been asked to consider an appropriate course of action for Thoman. A hearing date has not yet been set but it is believed that Thoman could face censure, a letter of reprimand, suspension or a withdrawal of his medical license, along with a fine of up to $2,000. Thoman’s career as Mayor of Southport has been somewhat controversial and he has had a number of disputes with councillors and officials.
