Indian women receive training in dental hygiene

Sample News Big

Indian women who have never been to school and have no qualifications are being trained in oral hygiene and learning how to perform dental procedures.

A group of Italian dentists visited Tilonia’s Barefoot College, a non-profit organisation which is run by Sanjit Roy; the dentists were looking to find women to train and educate and chose those who were not afraid of the sight of blood. Two of the women chosen by the Italian dentists were Bhawri and Kesar Devi, from Tilonia village.

In the past the two women worked in the fields and made a living being village midwives; now, they are learning how to perform complex dental procedures, such as root canal procedures, following training from the dentists. The two women now provide dental treatments, including fillings, extractions and cleaning treatments, to around 120 patients in the local area each month. The women also spend time talking to local people about oral health and teaching them how to look after their teeth and gums.

The Italian dentists say that the training scheme is going well; they spent time looking around for an organisation to get involved with and found the Barefoot College; since then, they have helped to train many people and the local community is benefitting from the skills and knowledge imparted by the dentists.
