Increased Investment for NHS Dental Services in North Yorkshire

Health bosses in North Yorkshire have announced extra investment for dental services in the area.

Executives at NHS North Yorkshire and York have confirmed that extra money will be spent to enable everyone in the area to access an NHS dentist by April 2012. Representatives from the trust said that one million pounds will be spent on recruiting more dentists in order to clear waiting lists, with currently around 9,000 people waiting to register with an NHS dentist.

John Renshaw, from the British Dental Association, said that he was not totally convinced by the numbers, but said that the commitment to clearing waiting lists was very positive. There is some confusion over the number of patients on the waiting lists, because some people register with a dentist directly without informing the trust and therefore their name remains on the list, even though they have managed to secure a place.

Figures reveal that waiting lists have already decreased over the last four months and Lorraine Naylor from NHS North Yorkshire and York said that progress has been made and the trust is committed to enabling every individual in the area to have access to an NHS dentist by the beginning of April next year.
