Improved Healthcare Services At HMP Sudbury

Inmates at HMP Sudbury now have access to improved healthcare services after major refurbishment work.

Bosses at the prison have overseen extensive renovation, which has improved healthcare facilities, with the creation of a pharmacy, a dental suite, consultation rooms and better facilities for members of staff.

The changes were made after an audit revealed that standards were below par and inmates were invited to look around the new facilities last week at an official opening ceremony. The report from NHS Derbyshire said that the facilities were not good enough and would not meet Care Quality Commission standards for infection control and this triggered the renovation plans.

Prisoners at the facility have been involved with the refurbishment work, giving their ideas for the design of the new areas and also suggesting names.

Anthony Nichols JP, head of health and justice for NHS England, said that spending in prisons is a sensitive issue but it is only right that improvements are made when needed and inmates should have the right to the same standard of healthcare facilities as other members of society.

Refurbishment work has also been carried out at nearby HMP Foston and both projects were funded by NHS Derbyshire, with a total cost of £302,000.
