Nursery school children in Ilminster have been presented with free toothbrushes as part of National Smile Month.

Children from Neroche Playgroup were given brushes as part of initiatives rolled out to celebrate National Smile Month, an annual campaign run by the British Dental Health Foundation. This year’s campaign will end on the 18th June.

One of the main aims of National Smile Month is to prevent oral health issues in children and improve standards of oral health in the UK in the future. Recent statistics released by the BDHF show that a third of children starting school have signs of tooth decay, while a quarter of children aged under 5 are at risk of ending up in hospital as a result of dental decay.

As part of new measures introduced by Somerset County Council, all pre-school children will be provided with a dental kit containing a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Decay is one of the most common preventable illnesses in British children and the leading cause of hospital admissions involving young children. In order to combat high rates of decay, the British Dental Health Foundation and other dental charities are working with dentists, schools and local authorities to improve oral health education and encourage parents to take their children for regular check-ups, keep tabs on their child’s diet and encourage them to brush their teeth twice a day.
