Illegal Dentist Surrenders Three Months After Police Issue Arrest Warrant

A dentist who was practising illegally has turned himself in three months after police in Vancouver issued a warrant for his arrest.

David Wu appeared at a police station in Toronto on Saturday night after police issued a national warrant for his arrest.

In an interview on Sunday, Constable Rod Stebbler confirmed that Mr Wu had come into the station on Saturday evening and was arrested for contempt of court.

Mr Wu, also known as Tung Sheng Wu, had offered illegal dental services at two addresses in Burnaby and Coquitlam.

The College of Dental Surgeons in British Columbia worked with police to try and close the illegal operations down and urged members of the public to avoid the bogus dentist, issuing a statement that warned that he was “not qualified nor competent.”

Mr Wu had already agreed to a court order, which was issued in 2003; however, he continued to offer dental treatment and was sentenced to three months in jail by a judge last month; the charges were made in absentia.

Representatives from the dental college said that Mr Wu was determined to make profit out of vulnerable people who could usually not afford to pay regular dental fees. They confirmed that Mr Wu had asked patients to visit him at a Coquitlam address after operations were uncovered at premises in Burnaby.

Mr Wu will now attend a bail hearing at Ontario Supreme Court on Monday.
