Ilfracombe Dental Practice Launches Christmas Shoebox Appeal

A dental team in Ilfracombe is urging local people to think of others this Christmas by putting together a shoebox for those less fortunate. The festive appeal is designed to help those who are feeling lonely, as well as those suffering from illness this Christmas time.

The team from Torrs Park Dental Practice will be collecting shoeboxes in the coming weeks and distributing them in time for Christmas. Inspired by the shoebox appeals run by charities for children living in poor countries, Torrs Park’s Vicki Jephcote decided to follow suit and start collecting for local people.

Vicki was speaking to the manager of a local halfway house and said that she was shocked to hear that so many people are struggling, especially in the run-up to Christmas, which can be an incredibly sad and lonely time for those who are unemployed, don’t have family or have suffered bereavement. The shoebox appeal will help to make a difference this Christmas and it enables those who are more fortunate to share the festive spirit and help others out.

The team will be collecting the boxes through November and has asked for small non-perishable festive treats, toiletries and items of clothing such a gloves, hats and scarves.

The practice is building on the success of the On the Doorstep campaign, which was launched in the summer with the aim of reaching out into the community and helping people who are vulnerable, isolated or suffering from poor health.
