Hygienists aiming to encourage better oral health

Dental hygienists in Invercargill, New Zealand, have been stepping up the campaign to improve oral health across the region.

The number of dental hygienists in New Zealand is increasing year on year and many part-time staff are becoming full-time members of the dental team. Dental hygiene is an extremely important part of oral healthcare and staff are keen to promote oral health and raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene.

Many people visit their hygienist for a thorough cleaning treatment, which goes much deeper than cleaning with a manual or electric toothbrush. However, the work of the hygienist is becoming more varied and many are keen to get out into the community and visit schools, community centres and local groups to educate people about oral health and the potential dangers associated with poor oral hygiene.

Dental hygienists have not been around for long in New Zealand and many who are now working there were trained in the UK or America; existing members of the New Zealand Dental Hygienists Association are keen to encourage more people to pursue dental hygiene as a career and are eager to increase the number of practices using dental hygienists.
