Hull dental practice offers free mouth cancer screening in November

A dental practice in Hessle Road, Hull is offering free mouth cancer screening in November to support Mouth Cancer Action Month.

St Andrew’s Dental Care will be hosting free oral cancer screening on Thursday 30th November as part of a national campaign to try and reduce oral cancer rates and raise awareness of this deadly disease.

More than 7,000 people were diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK last year, yet awareness remains poor. Many people are unaware of the warning signs and symptoms, and this means that most cases are spotted at an advance stage when the chances of successful treatment are likely to be significantly lower. Dentists include mouth cancer checks as standard when they carry out a routine examination and going to the dentist on a regular basis could make the difference between life and death.

Symptoms of mouth cancer include ulcers and sores that take a long time to heal, red or white patches in the mouth, lumps and swelling and unexplained oral pain.

Dr Joe Rawcliffe, practice principal, said that people aren’t as knowledgeable about mouth cancer as other forms of cancer and campaigns like Mouth Cancer Action Month are incredibly important. Although it is relatively unknown, mouth cancer kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined.

Anyone who wishes to take advantage of free screening is encouraged to contact the practice directly.
