Dentists in the Highlands are delivering out of hours clinics for children to ensure they have access to preventative dental care.

Six practices in the Highlands have joined Clyde Munro’s mission to provide at least 1,000 children in Scotland with free fluoride varnish treatment by the end of the year. The dentists will be running special clinics outside of normal office hours to make sure that children get the treatment they need.

Torwood Dental Practice and Inshes Dental Centre in Inverness, M&S Dental Care in Fort William, Invergordon Dental Practice, Glencoe Dental Centre and McIntyre, Corbett & Associates in Dingwall are participating in the national scheme.

The pandemic caused widespread disruption to dental services and only 55% of children in some parts of the country have seen a dentist in the last two years. Clyde Munro is providing out of hours clinics for children to reduce waiting times and lower the risk of dental decay.

Fluoride varnish is applied to the teeth to protect the enamel and reduce the risk of cavities. Fluoride strengthens the enamel via a quick and painless procedure. Ordinarily, children would be offered treatment at least once a year, but the pandemic has created a huge backlog. Data also suggests that children from deprived areas are up to four times more likely to develop decay than those from more affluent parts.

Tooth decay is the most common reason children in the UK go to hospital, despite the fact that almost all cases of decay are preventable.

Parents and carers who are interested in finding out more about Clyde Munro’s free fluoride varnish scheme are encouraged to contact their local Clyde Munro practice.
