Highbury Trust Launches New Dental Initiative for Adults with Learning Disabilities

Sample News Big

The Highbury Trust, which supports adults affected by learning disabilities in Plymouth, has launched a new dental initiative, which aims to improve standards of oral health.

As part of the initiative, the trust will appoint dental ambassadors to help with educating others about oral health. This is the first project of its kind in the UK, with clients of the trust helping out fellow members. The project is being supported by the Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise.

The new ambassador training programme will involve around 10-12 clients of the trust receiving training to enable them to spread messages about the importance of oral health. The emphasis will be focused around brushing and oral hygiene, healthy eating and the impact of diet on oral health and access to dental services.

The scheme is designed to encourage ambassadors to develop the confidence to be able to talk to their peers about oral health issues and spread important messages about oral hygiene and diet.

Robert Witton, director of the Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise, said that it was exciting to be working with the Highbury Trust on such a worthwhile and innovative scheme. He added that the experience would be a learning curve for everyone at PDSE, as well as those involved at the trust.
