A determined dentist from Henley took on a 100 mile walk for a cancer charity over the weekend. Patrick Chen from Blandy House Dental Practice, was joined by his wife Britgitte for the hike, which took place over three days.

The duo is tackling the Howard’s Way Walk to raise funds for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Patrick and Brigitte were part of a team of 20 taking on the trek, which was started eight years ago by Howard Kerr, a friend of the couple. The team began on Friday and finished the walk on Sunday.

Speaking before the event, Mrs Chen said that the challenge would be tough, but it was something they wanted to do in memory of Howard, who died of pancreatic cancer in August 2008. He once managed to walk the route, which spans Exmoor and Dartmoor, before he passed away. He will be a huge inspiration to the team as they try and conquer more than 30 miles per day. Mrs Chen is no stranger to the walk and has taken part in the previous seven annual events. She is a very enthusiastic supporter of both the trek and the charity. Mr Kerr’s wife Jane will be providing drinks and snacks to keep the walkers going.

Mr Chen said that the walk was an important event in the calendar for the couple, as Howard was a close friend. The Chens remain close to the rest of the family and the walk is something they are keen to support for many years to come. Since the walk began, participants have raised more than £350,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
