Hartlepool dental worker heads to Uganda

A dental therapist from Hartlepool is heading to Uganda to help provide dental care and education to people in rural villages in the east of the country.

Joanne Brown, from Elliott McCarthy Dental Care, is set to leave the UK this weekend to spend two weeks in the villages of Mbale and Kumi. Joanne will team up with four other dental workers from the North East and other volunteers as part of a ten man group. The group will provide dental care to local people from mobile dental units; they will offer routine dental treatment and educational sessions to teach people about oral hygiene and oral health.

Joanne said she was inspired to embark on the journey after hearing tales from a friend, who had participated in a similar programme. She decided to sign up for the next Christian Relief Uganda Dental Mission and is preparing to leave for Uganda tomorrow. Joanne had to raise £1,000 for the charity before leaving and organised a number of fundraising events in Hartlepool, including car boot sales and a Halloween fancy dress party.

Christian Relief Uganda helps to offer local people basic dental care, as well as helping dentists in Uganda to learn skills and equip them with the resources they need to treat Ugandan people. The organisation arranges dental missions on a regular basis and volunteers provide a valuable, sometimes life-changing, service.
