Haiti dental mission abandoned amidst safety fears

A mission to take medical and dental supplies to Haiti has been called off amidst safety concerns.

Dr Bruce McFarlane was planning to take a team of volunteers to Haiti in March but the trip has been cancelled after both the Canadian and American governments issued travel warnings and advised anyone against travelling to Haiti. The warnings were made as a result of civil unrest in the country, which has been linked to the presidential elections.

The team of volunteers will now travel to the Dominican Republic instead. They will take medical and dental equipment and supplies to the area of Bateys. The team of 26 visited the area last year and were planning to return after they had made a trip to Haiti.

The team are currently collecting supplies and any donations will be gratefully received. Some of the supplies will still be taken out to Haiti thanks to the generosity of a Winnipeg moving company.

Haiti is still struggling to come to terms with the effects of the devastating earthquake that hit the country a year ago. Billions of dollars worth of aid was pledged by governments and charities, but there have been difficulties getting the aid to people in need and recovery has been very slow. Many people have also been killed by a cholera outbreak. Bruce McFarlane is hoping to take the team of volunteers to Haiti next year.
