Councillors in North Lanarkshire have given plans to create a new health and dental centre the green light. Councillors have also approved proposals for a new retail unit.

Members of the North Lanarkshire planning and transportation committee met to discuss the plans and approved both projects in Kilsyth. NHS Lanarkshire is planning to build the new £7.8 million health centre next to the swimming pool in the centre of Kilsyth; the centre will replace the current facility at Burngreen Park.

The new state of the art health centre will boast a host of health services, including a GP practice, a dental surgery, mental health services, podiatry, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.

MSP Mark Griffin said that he was pleased that the plans had been approved by councillors, as there have been complaints about the current health facilities and the new purpose-built facility will provide better surroundings for staff and patients, as well as enabling patients to access a host of health services under the same roof. He added that he hopes building work will commence as soon as possible.

MP Gregg McClymont also backed the plans and believes that the new health centre will make a huge difference to local people; he described the state of the art health centre as “much-needed.”

According to plans set out by NHS North Lanarkshire, the project should be completed by 2015.
