Grantham dental team works up a sweat with charity step-a-thon

A dental team from Grantham worked up a sweat for a good cause recently.

Members of staff from Maltings Dental Surgery took part in a step-a-thon to raise money for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and to raise awareness of a type of cancer that is becoming increasingly prevalent in the UK. The team of 28 took it in turns, getting on and off a stepper continuously from 8.30 am until 5pm on Thursday 5th December.

As well as raising over £135 for charity, the team also took the opportunity to use the activity to talk to patients about mouth cancer and to try and raise awareness of the most common causes and symptoms. The event came just as the Oral Health Foundation’s annual Mouth Cancer Action Month came to an end.

A spokesperson for the practice said that everyone was keen to get involved to support the Mouth Cancer Foundation and to try and encourage patients to be mouth aware and to keep up to date with routine check-ups. Survival rates for oral cancer are lower than many other forms of cancer, and this is largely due to the fact that the majority of patients are diagnosed at a late stage. Educating people about the signs and causes will hopefully help to ensure that any problems are detected early, when the chances of successful treatment are significantly higher.

Donations are still being collected and all the funds raised will go directly to the Mouth Cancer Foundation, a charity that supports individuals affected by oral cancer.
