Residents joined members of staff and students from Glasgow University’s School of Dentistry to try and set a new record this weekend (9th June). Hundreds of people gathered at the SEC to create the World’s Biggest Smile. Representatives from the dental school are now awaiting confirmation that they have set a new Guinness World Record.

On the day, participants wore red and white ponchos to create the outline of a beaming smile. The aim of the record attempt was to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health, and encourage people to take good care of their pearly whites. Those who took part in the record-breaking challenge were treated to a performance by the dental school’s Big Band, which played a host of classics to keep the crowds entertained.

Head of the dental school, Professor Jeremy Bagg, said that he was “delighted” to be able to achieve the target of assembling 1,000 people to create a giant smile. The challenge was part of Glasgow’s efforts to support National Smile Month, an annual campaign run by the Oral Health Foundation. Prof Bagg said that it was great fun planning the event, and everyone involved looked like they were having a fantastic time. The team of organisers is now waiting to receive official confirmation of the record from Guinness World Records.

Prof Bagg also commented that although the venture was a lot of fun, it had a serious message and Glasgow University’s dental school has an important part to play in encouraging local people to take an interest in oral health and promoting good oral health habits.
