General Dental Council issues counterfeit goods warning

The body responsible for governing dental professionals in the UK, the General Dental Council, has issued a warning urging dentists to be cautious when buying equipment and supplies. Dentists have been warned by the GDC to avoid purchasing counterfeit goods at all costs to protect themselves and the public.

The message comes after a dentist was found guilty of buying non-compliant, counterfeit dental equipment on an online auction site at a GDC hearing. The dentist in question was subsequently suspended for three months.

Jonathan Green, director of fitness to practise at the GDC, said that the case highlights the importance of the decisions dentists make when they purchase new equipment and will hopefully remind them to search only for compliant goods. The rules are detailed in the GDC’s ‘Standards for Dental Professionals.’

The GDC and the BDIA (British Dental Industry Association) have also urged dentists who suspect that they may be dealing with providers of counterfeit equipment to report sellers.
