The primary role of the GDC FtP Panel is to guard patients through activities for learning, discussing challenges, seeking solutions, understanding roles, setting standards, self-regulation, providing career opportunities, accountability, and examining patient and practitioner views.

The GDC has opened recruitment for the Fitness to Practise Panel to a wide range of individuals from dental practitioners; dental care workers, dental nurses and teeth straightening therapists, amongst others; to lay panel members, including the wider general public. “This is an opportunity to make a real difference. We welcome applicants from all walks of life. We’ll provide induction and regular training for successful candidates” announced Chair of the GDC, Alison Lockyer.

Membership of the panel is dependent on certain competencies that include understanding complex legislative frameworks and procedural issues, and a high degree of confidentiality. Skills required are for analysis and necessary resolutions, objective reasoning, professional communication both verbal and in written word, listening, collaboration and teamwork. The individual also needs to inspire trust in others, and value diversity and equality. Lockyer says that the GDC are “…looking for individuals of ability, who are passionate about the contribution we make to improving healthcare services, who understand the far-reaching effect that our work can have and who approach their work with integrity and objectivity.”
