The General Dental Council has criticised the School of Dentistry at Queen’s University Belfast, claiming that a lack of communication among managers is harming the quality of education.

The GDC report called for immediate action to improve communication and subsequently improve standards of education for dental students. The head of the school said that the report was embarrassing.

The report stated that there was very poor communication between managers and teaching professionals and also highlighted a need for the modernisation of teaching programmes. The GDC warned that the current situation was putting patients at risk and called for specialist teachers to join the school.

An inspection was carried out at short notice earlier this year, after the council raised concerns. Investigators found that students were not getting enough clinical training at the Royal School of Dentistry and criticised the general running of the dental programme. A further investigation will be carried out early next year.

Professor Patrick Johnston, Dean of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, said that members of staff had welcomed the investigators and learnt a lot from their visit. He added that the considerations and suggestions would be taken on board and the school would take steps to move forward.
