Health officials have confirmed that additional funds will be made available for public dental services in Queensland.

Officials from the South West Hospital and Health Service confirmed that additional funding worth $162,000 has been approved; the money will be used to expand services in Roma and St George.

Jenny Flynn, community and allied health director at the health service, said that the cash injection will fund extra members of staff and some work will now be outsourced to a private dentist. She urged local people to take advantage of the service and encouraged those who are not registered with a dentist to join the register. Flynn said that there are many people who do not realise that they are eligible for oral care and free dental care is readily available for patients with concession cards.

Flynn said that many services do not have lengthy waiting lists, but patients do not bother to get in touch to ask about dental care because they assume that they will have to wait a long time for treatment. She called for patients who need oral care and those who do not have a dentist to get in touch with the South West Hospital and Health Service.
