Friends and Family Pay Tribute to Bognor Dentist

Friends, family members and colleagues have gathered together to pay tribute to popular dentist and music club chairman, Derek Debuse.

Derek trained as a dentist at the Royal Dental Hospital in Leicester Square and went on to treat hundreds of patients in the Billingshurst area during his career. His partner, Dereck Hill, shared anecdotes and reminisced about playing practical jokes at the surgery, claiming that the pair had never had a disagreement and commented that the patients had loved seeing him. For many, Dereck said, Derek Debuse had changed the way people viewed going to the dentist. Derek’s colleague at Guy’s hospital, David Craig, also spoke very highly of the dentist and gave an insight into the work he had done in sedation dentistry and helping patients to combat dental anxiety.

Derek was a popular member of the community, not solely because of his chair-side manner, but also due to his enthusiasm and commitment for the Bognor Regis Music Club, of which he was president.

Derek was chairman of the club for more than thirty years, but eventually stepped down in 2011, as a result of illness.

Derek was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, cancer of the bone marrow and died after a lengthy battle with the disease at the age of 67. He is survived by his wife Gill and their children Stuart and Maddie.
