Free Oral Cancer Screening at Whitton Dental Practice

A dental practice in Whitton is offering free oral cancer screening sessions as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month, a national campaign, which will run throughout November.

The Montrose Smile Studio on Montrose Avenue, is inviting patients to attend free screening sessions over the course of the next three weeks and has advertised the service with the slogan: ‘If in doubt, get checked out’.

Mouth Cancer Action Month is run by the British Dental Health Foundation and aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage people to see their dentist on a regular basis. Mouth cancer has become increasingly prevalent, with the number of cases doubling over the last decade, however, public awareness is low and as a result most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when treatment is less likely to be successful.

Residents in the Twickenham area are being invited to visit the practice for a very short and simple test, which could potentially save their lives. The test takes just a couple of minutes and does not involve any pain.

Mouth cancer kills more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined, yet many people are unaware of the causes and symptoms and for this reason, they do not visit their doctor or dentist when they develop warning signs. Dentists are urging patients to look out for red or white patches in the mouth, slow-healing ulcers and any lumps or swellings in the mouth or throat.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that he was delighted that Montrose Smile Studio decided to support the campaign.
